When placed in a toilet bowl the bags can create a seal to prevent sewage back flow. There is no sand required, simply put the pug in place and then sit the flood bag on top of the plug, against the overflow pipe (fill the overflow with damp cloth then hold in place with Flood Bag). When purchasing, flood bags ensure that they are packaged in vacuum sealed packaging. When exposed to the atmosphere the product will degrade as it absorbs moisture. Competitive products are often not sealed and will have been degrading from the day they were produced, severely reducing their efficiency. Those that do have a seal often packed in 25 or 30 are excellent until you break the seal; if you don't use all the bags the remaining ones will not be protected. Our flood bags are vacuum sealed in packs of three to ensure they're ready for use whenever you need them. They will last for up to 5 years if unopened.
